Long (Long the Market)

« Back to Glossary Index

Being long in a market means you’ve purchased an asset or financial instrument with the expectation that its value will rise over time. In this position, you benefit from upward price movements.

Whether it’s stocks, commodities, or futures contracts, going long is essentially an expression of optimism about future price trends. It’s the opposite of being “short” or betting that prices will decline.
